Have you been feeling stressed? Have you been in a funk, felt weird and off, but can’t put your finger on just why?
After hearing my friends blame all their recent tribulations on Mercury, I decided to explore and see if my own mishaps could be more than just arbitrary bad luck.
Mercury usually moves from west to east. Because each planet has its own orbital speed and distance, we are currently experiencing Mercury’s retrograde. Retrograde is when we Earthlings view another planet’s orbital as if it is moving backwards.
Scientists have established that for us, retrograde is an optical illusion. This phenomenon happens three or four times per year and is known to impact travel, communication and technology and can leave us feeling wonky. As someone who is not devoted to her zodiac sign, I’m definitely feeling these disruptions, but I am skeptical about whether or not it has anything to do with Mercury’s retrograde.
Either way, I believe it’s important to have some great stress reduction techniques in our back pockets. Here’s a few great suggestions from Ayurvedic health practices that can help us all - Mercury, or not!
Ayurveda is popping up everywhere lately. This ancient Eastern practice of wellness addresses many topics ranging from diet to sleep patterns. However, I challenge you to take a deeper approach through these practices by trying some marmas, mudras, and mantras. Marmas are energy points on the body used for healing, mudras are spiritual gestures used to enhance overall wellbeing, and mantras are phrases we speak for personal empowerment.
Check out these tips to keep your mind cool during Mercury retrograde whether or not you are a skeptic!
Replace one thing with something else
Reflect and realize what eats up your time. Are you spending a lot of time on Social media, reality television and gossip? While many things we do have a positive impact on our wellbeing, make sure you balance the way you spend your time with impactful ways to reduce physical manifestations of stress.
Apply pressure to the marma point, Katika Tarunam. It is known to relax your muscles and connective tissues. Located at the base of the gluteal fold and the pelvic crest, this energy point has the power to relieve abdominal pain due to gases. And no one wants to feel gassy in the summer!
Focus on the positive
It is easy to get caught up in tensions and frustrations from work, finances, and loved ones. With the power of email it can be hard to disconnect from work after hours, but focusing on the good and celebrating even the small things can help guide you to more fulfillment.
Practice the touch mudra Shuni Mudra. Touch the tip of your middle finger to your thumb tip. Keep the rest of your fingers relaxed. This mudra increases self-awareness and increases patience and compassion. Practicing this mudra supports improvements in relationships with yourself and with others.
Take a step
In our day-to-day lives we strive to feel fulfilled. Self-fulfillment can come from many things. One source can be success in one’s career. However, we need to be careful not to get caught up and overwhelmed and burnt out at work.
Mantras can be helpful. Mantras are typically words or phrases used to help guide one to a place of better wellness or meditation concentration. A simple one such as “Om” stems from the universe’s sound gives meaning to many people. Other people choose quotes they resonate with. Finding a mantra you identify with or creating your own and repeating it to yourself often can help empower you to take the next step.
Adding new rituals into your day-to-day life can help you manage stress and frustration brought on by Mercury, or otherwise. This retrograde movement can trigger emotions such as stress, frustration, and confusion.
While you may be skeptical yourself, I challenge you to be more self aware of your mind and body. We do not know everything Mercury’s retrograde may be capable of. And whether or not it's true, stressors happen everyday with or without Mercury’s impact. Whether or not you believe in it is up to you. For now it's nice to have something to blame everything on!
